Hearts of Freedom at the UNHCR Working Group Meeting on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways

Allan Moscovitch, Peter Duschinsky and Mondy Lim presented the Hearts of Freedom Research Project to a crowd of 70 people who attended the UNHCR Working Group reception in Ottawa.

The presentation began about 6:45 with a welcome by Marion Campbell Jarvis, the Assistant Deputy Minister of IRCC. We began with the 7 minute video that Mondy put together which was narrated by Mike. Allan then took a few minutes to introduce the project. Mondy was there to show them our website. Finally Peter emphasized the reasons for the project and told the audience about one of the former refugees we interviewed who was 11 years old when he left Vietnam on his own and survived some dangerous encounters before being adopted in Canada by a school teacher. Allan ended with a thank you to IRCC for on going financial support. The presentation was well received, we had several people compliment us on it.

They have each consented to making the video available to the public and they have consented to the use of the contents of their videos by the Hearts of Freedom project researchers. Consent is not available to external researchers to quote or publish from it. Researchers interested in the subject have the opportunity to view a documentary film, Passage to Freedom which has been completed and is available through a distributor https://www.mcintyre.ca/ Researchers from the project are in the process of completing a full length book based on the interviews. Once this book is available researchers will have the opportunity to review it and to refer to it for research purposes.
