HOF082: Vu Ninh
After spending a year and a half in the re-education camp because of his military service, Vu Ninh was determined to leave Vietnam. An opportunity to leave came in 1980 when he was offered space for two on a boat able to carry 200 passengers. He had to make the tough choice of splitting the family apart and bringing only the youngest of his three children, five-year-old Thuan, with him. The father and son were sponsored by Vu’s sister in Montreal for a year, before they moved to Toronto where Vu looked for better job opportunities while caring for his young child.
