HOF110: Dr. Lloyd Axworthy
Dr. Lloyd Axworthy began his career in politics as a member of the Manitoba legislature. As a provincial politician, he was involved in many local initiatives for youth. He also supported civil and women’s rights activities in Manitoba.
Lloyd Axworthy also served as a federal member of parliament. During his career in federal politics, he held several Cabinet positions, including Minister of Employment and Immigration in the early 1980s. As the then minister, he dealt with the Southeast Asian refugee crisis. He worked diligently with staff of his Department as well as several NGOs to welcome more than 60,000 refugees to Canada by 1985. The policies and practices that were developed by his Department during his tenure continue to inspire Canada’s on-going commitment to welcome refugees to Canada.
