Avec le temps, sa famille et lui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 contraints de faire face aux politiques sociales et \u00e9conomiques oppressives des Khmers Rouges. Les communistes l'ont forc\u00e9 \u00e0 rejoindre une \u00e9quipe mobile de jeunes, travaillant du cr\u00e9puscule \u00e0 l'aube. La nourriture \u00e9tait rare et, par cons\u00e9quent, certains Cambodgiens sont morts de faim ou suite \u00e0 brutalit\u00e9 des camps de travail.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but de 1979, apr\u00e8s l'invasion vietnamienne, il est retourn\u00e9 \u00e0 Phnom Penh pour travailler en tant que fonctionnaire du d\u00e9partement des affaires \u00e9trang\u00e8res du Cambodge, sous la supervision du gouvernement vietnamien. Une fois employ\u00e9, il a remis en question le syst\u00e8me politique du gouvernement en place et a conclu que la structure du pouvoir n\u2019\u00e9tait pas diff\u00e9rente de celle du r\u00e9gime des Khmers Rouges. En cons\u00e9quence, il choisit de fuir son pays et se dirigea vers la fronti\u00e8re tha\u00eflandaise.<\/p>\n<p>En septembre 1979, il a trouv\u00e9 du travail dans une unit\u00e9 m\u00e9dicale d'un camp de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s. Il a finalement travaill\u00e9 pour l'ambassade du Canada, o\u00f9 sa demande de statut de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 trait\u00e9e.
