Lui et son \u00e9pouse ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de laisser derri\u00e8re eux leur vie et leur carri\u00e8re \u00e0 Vientiane, au Laos. Il \u00e9tait pharmacien et elle \u00e9tait infirmi\u00e8re. Ils se sont rendus au domicile des grands-parents maternels de Milana dans la ville frontali\u00e8re de Savannakhet. En 1980, son p\u00e8re a travers\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s le M\u00e9kong en Tha\u00eflande. Peu de temps apr\u00e8s, Milana, avec sa m\u00e8re et sa s\u0153ur, s\u2019est enfuie avec l'aide de son grand-p\u00e8re. Ils se sont d\u00e9guis\u00e9 en p\u00eacheurs, ont cach\u00e9 Milana, cinq ans, et sa s\u0153ur a\u00een\u00e9e sous un tas de feuilles de bananier dans la coque d'un bateau de p\u00eache, et ont risqu\u00e9 de traverser le M\u00e9kong en plein jour. Une fois qu'ils ont travers\u00e9 la rivi\u00e8re, ils ont retrouv\u00e9 son p\u00e8re et se sont rendus dans un camp de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s.
