Il \u00e9tait le plus jeune d'une famille de six enfants. Ses parents \u00e9taient fermiers et la famille \u00e9tait pauvre. En cons\u00e9quence, Yi a \u00e9t\u00e9 forc\u00e9 de quitter l'\u00e9cole \u00e0 un \u00e2ge pr\u00e9coce pour gagner sa vie. En 1965, il quitte son village pour apprendre \u00e0 travailler comme tailleur \u00e0 Phnom Penh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Au cours de sa carri\u00e8re, il a travaill\u00e9 dans plusieurs boutiques de v\u00eatements. En 1975, lorsque les Khmers rouges ont envahi Phnom Penh, il se souvient que lui et des milliers de ses concitoyens ont \u00e9t\u00e9 contraints de quitter la capitale. Ils devaient \u00e9vacuer sans la compagnie de leurs proches. Ils n'\u00e9taient pas autoris\u00e9s \u00e0 apporter leurs biens avec eux au moment de leur d\u00e9part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Enfin, Yi et sa famille ont \u00e9t\u00e9 parrain\u00e9s par son beau-fr\u00e8re qui vivait au Canada. La migration de la famille a \u00e9t\u00e9 retard\u00e9e par l\u2019handicap de Yi, mais la famille a finalement obtenu l'asile \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, Qu\u00e9bec, en juillet 1981. Apr\u00e8s leur parrainage, Yi et son \u00e9pouse ont pu trouver un emploi \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al o\u00f9 ils se sont install\u00e9s de fa\u00e7on permanente.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Avec le temps, Yi s\u2019est r\u00e9uni avec certains membres de sa famille, dont son \u00e9pouse et son enfant. Yi \u00e9tait d\u00e9termin\u00e9 \u00e0 quitter son pays car il craignait pour la vie de sa famille. Le groupe a parcouru leur pays pendant des kilom\u00e8tres \u00e0 la recherche de refuge dans les villages qu'ils ont rencontr\u00e9s au cours de leur longue marche. Ils ont rencontr\u00e9 des champs de cadavres et de mines terrestres ou ont espionn\u00e9 des Cambodgiens emprisonn\u00e9s par les Khmers rouges.
