Enfant, il a grandi aux Pays-Bas. Jeune homme, il a immigr\u00e9 au Canada avec sa famille afin d'\u00e9chapper aux atrocit\u00e9s de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/p>\n<p>Comme de nombreux Canadiens pendant les ann\u00e9es 1970, Arie et ses coll\u00e8gues \u00e0 l'\u00e9glise \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9occup\u00e9s par le sort des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s de l\u2019Asie du Sud-est. En tant qu'anciens immigrants, ils voulaient les aider. Lui et ses coll\u00e8gues ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9s \u00e0 assister \u00e0 une r\u00e9union organis\u00e9e par le Conseil canadien des \u00e9glises du Canada o\u00f9 ils ont appris la possibilit\u00e9 de parrainer des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s souhaitant s'\u00e9tablir au Canada. Peu de temps apr\u00e8s, le conseil d'administration du Conseil des \u00c9glises chr\u00e9tiennes r\u00e9form\u00e9es a nomm\u00e9 Arie coordinateur du projet de parrainage.<\/p>\n<p>Arie a travaill\u00e9 en \u00e9troite collaboration avec les 250 congr\u00e9gations du Conseil des \u00c9glises chr\u00e9tiennes r\u00e9form\u00e9es \u00e0 travers le pays. Il a approuv\u00e9 les demandes des congr\u00e9gations qui voulaient parrainer des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s dans leurs communaut\u00e9s particuli\u00e8res. Les congr\u00e9gations devaient parrainer des familles pendant au moins un an et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9es \u00e0 trouver un logement, \u00e0 organiser une formation linguistique et \u00e0 aider les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s dans leur recherche d'emploi.
