Fils d'un commandant militaire, l'un des huit enfants, Chu a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 \u00e9chapper \u00e0 la capture chaque fois qu'une \u00e9vasion planifi\u00e9e \u00e9chouait, en partie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son instinct rapide de se d\u00e9coller de la foule, mais aussi en partie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la protection offerte par des \u00e9trangers. Lors de son voyage vers la Malaisie dans un bateau de p\u00eache de 13 m\u00e8tres rempli de 99 personnes, Chu a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 repousser les pirates tha\u00eflandais qui ont tent\u00e9 d'attaquer le bateau.
