Lui, sa femme, son b\u00e9b\u00e9 et sa nourrice sont mont\u00e9s \u00e0 bord d'un navire de la marine avec 600 autres passagers. \u00c0 leur arriv\u00e9e au port de Vung Tau au Vi\u00eatnam, le navire de la marine vietnamienne, surcharg\u00e9 de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s, a \u00e9t\u00e9 escort\u00e9 par la marine am\u00e9ricaine \u00e0 Subic Base, aux Philippines et de l\u00e0 les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s ont \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9s \u00e0 Guam sur un bateau de la marine marchande am\u00e9ricaine 13 jours plus tard. Une fois dans le camp de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s de Guam, la famille a choisi le Canada comme destination pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e. Ils sont arriv\u00e9s au Canada le 13 mai 1975. Une fois \u00e9tabli \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, LE Van Chau a poursuivi ses \u00e9tudes et a retrouv\u00e9 son permis de pratiquer la m\u00e9decine en 1977. En avril 1988, il -Il s'est port\u00e9 volontaire pour travailler sur un bateau en mer, appartenant \u00e0 l'organisation internationale M\u00e9decins du Monde (si\u00e8ge social \u00e0 Paris) pendant quatre semaines pour venir en aide aux \u00ab boat-people \u00bb vietnamiens demandeurs d'asile. Au cours de cette exp\u00e9rience, il a retrouv\u00e9 l'un de ses coll\u00e8gues m\u00e9decins. Il a parrain\u00e9 son coll\u00e8gue qui, par la suite, est \u00e9galement devenu m\u00e9decin au Canada.
