Ils ont pay\u00e9 6 onces d'or pour monter \u00e0 bord d'un bateau surpeupl\u00e9 durant leur qu\u00eate de la libert\u00e9.  Apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 5 jours et 4 nuits en mer, les passagers ont rencontr\u00e9 un navire de la marine. L\u2019\u00e9quipage du navire les a pris en charge jusqu\u2019\u00e0 leur arriv\u00e9e dans un camp de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s \u00e0 Paulo Bidong, en Malaisie. Tout au long de leur parcours p\u00e9nible, ils ont eu la chance d'\u00e9viter la rencontre avec des navires pirates et ont atterri en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9 en Malaisie.  Le p\u00e8re et le fils sont rest\u00e9s en Malaisie pendant 9 mois. Au cours de leur s\u00e9jour, ils ont rencontr\u00e9 des responsables de l'immigration canadienne qui ont organis\u00e9 leur migration vers le Canada. Ils ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de s'installer \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, au Qu\u00e9bec. Une fois install\u00e9s, Truong Van Hoan a rapidement trouv\u00e9 un emploi pour subvenir \u00e0 leurs besoins. Au cours de sa carri\u00e8re, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 directeur d'une \u00e9cole secondaire \u00e0 Dalat (Vietnam).
