Mais devant subir un harc\u00e8lement constant, il a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de partir avec un petit groupe d'amis dans un bateau se dirigeant vers l'est pour les Philippines. Dans un camp de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s, Nguyen a pass\u00e9 tout son temps \u00e0 aider. Il a construit des abris et des lits en bois pour d'autres r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s, r\u00e9par\u00e9 des moteurs de voiture avec un r\u00e9parateur local et fourni des services d'interpr\u00e9tation quand il le pouvait. Peu de temps apr\u00e8s son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 R\u00e9gina, en Saskatchewan, puis \u00e0 Edmonton, en Alberta, Nguyen aidait les nouveaux arrivants plus r\u00e9cents \u00e0 apprendre \u00e0 se rep\u00e9rer dans une \u00e9picerie, \u00e0 compl\u00e9ter les formulaires de demande dans les bureaux du gouvernement et \u00e0 se pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 leur premi\u00e8re entrevue d'emploi. L'engagement envers le d\u00e9veloppement communautaire \u00e9tait fort au cours des premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es. Une fois, lorsque Nguyen a \u00e9t\u00e9 embauch\u00e9 pour se rendre dans des villes \u00e9loign\u00e9es de la province pour interviewer d'autres nouveaux arrivants du Vietnam, certains \u00e9taient
