Apr\u00e8s six jours en mer, alors que le bateau s'approchait de la c\u00f4te de la Malaisie, les autorit\u00e9s malaisiennes l'ont dirig\u00e9 vers une \u00eele d\u00e9serte o\u00f9 environ 1 000 \u00abboat people\u00bb vietnamiens avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9barqu\u00e9. Ils avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 induits en erreur en pensant que l'\u00eele \u00e9tait un camp de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s. Apr\u00e8s 10 jours sur l'\u00eele, les autorit\u00e9s malaisiennes ont ordonn\u00e9 \u00e0 Vu et \u00e0 ses compagnons de voyage de remonter sur leur bateau. Ils ont vol\u00e9 leur nourriture et leur eau ainsi qu'une boussole et ont remorqu\u00e9 le bateau vers les eaux internationales. Les passagers ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de poursuivre leur route vers l'Indon\u00e9sie, mais on leur a \u00e9galement dit de rebrousser chemin lorsqu'ils approcheraient du rivage. Ils ont re\u00e7u le m\u00eame message de la garde c\u00f4ti\u00e8re de Singapour, et cette fois avec la menace de coups de feu. D\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9s, les passagers ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de retourner en Malaisie.
